Fontebranda is a typical medieval fountain in the Tuscan style, and it is considered the most beautiful and important among similar fountains in various places. It was built in 1081, expanded in 1193, and finally covered with vaults in 1246.
One interesting feature is the division that once existed into three basins: the first provided drinking water to the citizens, which then flowed into the second basin to water the animals, and from there it went into the third basin for laundry purposes. Finally, the wastewater was sent to the nearby factories.
To reach the city center, you can also use the escalators that start near the Porta di Fontebranda and end in Via di Vallepiatta, just 200 meters from the Duomo.
