Arco di Riccardo is a Roman monument dating back to the 1st century AD. Located in the heart of Trieste's old town, it was commonly considered one of the gates in the ancient walls of Roman Tergeste. Recent research suggests it may actually be the entrance to the adjacent sanctuary of Magna Mater.
This simple and solid construction features a single arch, standing at 7.2m high, 5.3m wide, and 2m deep. Adorned with moderately decorated pilasters topped with Corinthian capitals, it exudes a timeless charm.
At night, the arch is beautifully illuminated, enhancing its allure. As you stroll through the narrow streets of the old town, passing by well-restored buildings and typical local establishments, you cannot miss Arco di Riccardo in Piazza del Barbacan.
