Looking for a unique and peaceful experience? Look no further than Santa Maria in Belverde! This marvelous structure is composed of three overlapping churches, each with its own fascinating history. Managed by the Mondo X Community, which focuses on rehabilitating troubled youth, the environment is well-maintained and welcoming.
Upon arrival, we were greeted by one of the so-called 'troubled' youths who provided us with a detailed description of the church. We were then invited to visit the nearby hermitage, where these young individuals live and work as part of their rehabilitation journey. Don't miss the chance to explore the cave of San Francesco, located behind the church on the mountain, although access to its interior requires contacting the Belverde Archaeological Park.
Immerse yourself in nature and the surrounding caves as you make your way to this beautiful location. Although the road leading to the church is not paved, it is easily manageable. The peacefulness and serenity of the area are truly captivating.
Inside the church, you'll find a stunning display of art. The lower church is adorned with 14th-century frescoes attributed to Cola Petruccioli, depicting the Crucifixion, Stigmata of St. Francis, Annunciation, and the Madonna with the Evangelists. The upper church also features additional frescoes by Petruccioli, showcasing the Stories of Mary Magdalene and the Life of the Virgin.
The custodian of the church was incredibly kind and accommodating, even opening the doors for us outside of regular hours and serving as a perfect guide. The stories and anecdotes shared by the Fraternity of Father Egidio will transport you back in time and deepen your appreciation for the valley and the church.
Experience the tranquility, silence, and warm smiles that await you at Santa Maria in Belverde. Don't miss the opportunity to visit this hidden gem!
